Thyroid Support

Hypothyroidism is the most common thyroid condition and becoming more so as we progressively live a more industrialized life.

Anybody can experience hypothyroid symptoms, but it is more likely if you are a woman. The reason for this is not fully understood by medical sciences yet.

The medical gold standard for evaluating thyroid function is a TSH blood test, the most common thyroid test to indirectly assess thyroid status, ordered by doctors. Other tests that are also very helpful to evaluate the actual thyroid hormones in your blood is the free T4, free T3 and reverse T3 tests. See also the section for Hashimoto's Thyroiditis to learn more about this pervasive cause of low thyroid and how to test for it.

The most important symptoms of low thyroid are fatigue, weigth gain, depression and low mood and non-refreshing sleep.

Symptoms of low thyroid are:

  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain
  • Depression
  • Sensitivity to cold
  • High cholesterol
  • Muscle or joint aches
  • Brain fog, including poor memory and poor concentration
  • Non-refreshing sleep
  • Brittle hair and nails
  • Constipation
  • Shortness of breath (often called “air hunger”)
  • Thinning hair
  • Sensitivity to cold
  • PMS
  • Significantly calloused heels
  • Chronic yeast infections
  • Low libido
  • Infertility

Most people can make a difference in their thyroid health through focused supplementation. This is especially true for Americans due to a very high incidence of iodine and selenium deficiency, two essential ingredients for the formation of healthy thyroid levels and maintaining thyroid health.

An effective systematic approach to thyroid healing may include eating a grain free and definitely a gluten free diet, which is linked to low thyroid and Hashimoto's autoimmune disease.

Nutritional deficiencies play a role in low thyroid states. In addition to iodine and selenium, tyrosine, zinc, copper, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin B12 and Ashwaganda helps support healthy thyroid hormone levels and thus healthy energy levels.
